Default

Options
I recently got my £2 stat credit report and discovered I have 2 defaults dating back a couple of years. Both were credit cards Post office and H2x (Halifax) and both quite rightly defaulted me as I was really struggling to keep up and was in all sorts of trouble. I am now paying off the H2x via Apex credit management with 0% interest but paying it off nonetheless. The Post Office one is the one I have an issue with. I am back on track now but i am still paying £35 a month interest on it despite them having defaulted me. Is there any advantage of me continuing to pay them this interest as if my account is defaulted I don't see the point? I'd rather use the interest to pay something else off. Can they default me again?
Regards
Smiffy

They cannot add a new default to your credit file.

However if you stop repayments then they could take court action against you to try to obtain a CCJ.
If they were sucessful in obtaining a CCJ and if you did not pay it off in full within a month then the CCJ would appear on your credit file for 6years.

  • I wasn't thinking about not paying the outstanding balance, more along the lines of asking for them to stop adding on the interest. Would they consider this? Does a default not stay on your file for 6 years too?

You can certainly ask them to consider freezing interest. Though I suspect they may have been more likely to do this when you were in arrears rather than now you are on top of payments. But worth trying considering you already have a default.

Yes the default will stay on your credit file for 6years from the date of default as shown on your file. The point with the CCJ is it would stay on file for longer overall, as it would be 6years from the date of the judgement.
