Hi..
I bought a car almost 12 months ago. It's a 2009 Peugeot 308 SW (Diesel). It's given me 11.5 months of good motoring. Today it's displayed the "Check Oil" alert for the first time. Two questions please
1. It's booked in for its free service and free MOT on 27/06/14. Should I wait & let them replace the oil? Will I be ok to leave it until then ?
2. If I do need to replace/top up the oil before then, which oil should I choose please? I'd hate to put the wrong sort in
Thanks in advance

Check your oil.
If it's got plenty, then don't worry, leave it till the free service.
If it's low, go to Halfords.com and key in your reg. That'll tell you what you need.0 -
Thanks so much.
I never knew that you could put your REG in like that on www.halfords.com I'll do as you suggest when I'm home tomorrow and check oil
At least if I need it, I know I need this one :

Dont start the engine until you have checked the oil level.
Dont wait for the oil light as that comes on when your already doing the damage.
Your supposed to check the oil level and other fluids frequently. Weekly or Monthly at least.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

What this man said. I'd check it and if it needs a small amount, check your reg and get a small 1L bottle to tide you over.
As for brands I never really buy anything other than Castrol GTX Magnatec, great stuff, good for protecting your engine.0 -

An update. When I got home at 8:30am this morning I parked at the end of the drive (flattest part of road near my house - my drive slopes) and went off to bed (On Nights this week). Got up at 2pm & went and checked oil. I'd say it was about 1/3 of an inch higher than the minimum "groove" on the gauge after checking it 2-3 times. Funnily enough, since then the "Check oil" alert has gone and it now says "Oil ok" when I start up. I'll keep a close eye on the next few days, but I'm inclined to leave it & then see how it comes out of the garage. Just a little way for me to check how thorough they are with their service0 -
I reckon the cause of the light coming on was the slope - but the thing is you've checked carefully with the car on the level and although it's low-ish it's above the minimum.
The difference between the Min & Max on almost every car these days is a litre.
As long as you're not planning any long and/or high speed trips in the next ten days (i.e. before the service) I'd be inclined to just leave it - for now.
Check it again in a few days.
And I would suggest that you check it fortnightly and top it up if needed.
Electronic checks and warning lights are all very well, but waiting for the light to come on is tempting fate IMHO.0
