janey1A, consider this from a buyers point of view as well. If someone came on here and said they had a test drive of a car and seller asked them to use bank transfer and collect next day- we would tell them to run a mile .

Of course I wouldn't expect them to come back the next day - I was thinking more along the lines of internet banking and a transfer being done while they have a cuppa here and wait as it clears in a couple of hours! That or, agree a price then they go to their bank for a bankers draft before we hand the car over. Maybe it wasn't the best idea but I'm not a regular at selling cars. I just don't agree with the way I've been spoken to - their customer service sucks!

Banker's drafts are not as safe as you think, albeit safer than a lot they can still encounter problems and be cancelled.

Just a warning for you as a seller. A bank draft is not as safe as it used to be, it is not the same as cash and will still need to be cleared against fraud- you could conceivably accept the draft pay it in and have it bounce as stolen. The old days where it was considered as safe as cash have gone.

As for bank transfers there are admittedly rare occurrences where transfers have been recalled on the same day, the scenario is unlikely but for sellers we usually advise them to wait until next day to ensure nothing odd is happening.thats why I said buyer would collect car next day.

Quite some time that they haven't been safe, I can remember my dad being told not to accept them as cash by a bank manager about 30 years ago. They should only be accepted the same as a cheque, so OK after 6 (?) days.

Remember: banker’s drafts aren’t guaranteed against fraud. If you lose one or it’s stolen, someone else could use it fraudulently. Always ask your bank to check the draft – this can sometimes be done by telephone.

Thanks for all the replies. I was advised by paypal customer services to go for bank transfer or bankers draft but I will definitely opt for cash.

Just hope I can find a buyer after all this!!:)

Just an update for those of you kind enough to post in my thread.

Sold my car after a week :j, first couple to see it bought it, they live 5 mins away and were a lovely, friendly couple. She came in and our kids played together while the men took the car out. They paid by bank transfer - at their request because she didn't want to walk around with that amount of cash.

Restores my faith in some people - there are nice, genuine buyers out there, you just have to be careful!!

We had a couple of other enquiries - all through ebay, well worth the classified ad cost. Won't bother with gumtree again!
