Insurance for delivery of expensive items

I have only really sold low value items, up to £30 - £100 and have never actually thought about insurance, ie when posting (or using a courier)

I am about to sell some valuable electronic items, so insurance is probably a must.

Do I simply add the premium to my post and packaging rate and keep quiet ?

or

Do I do as above, but mention that insurance is included

Do buyers readily accept paying for insurance, or should the seller really be responsible in full ?

thanks

Buyers ultimately pay fore all costs, where you add those costs doesn't really matter.

Personally I rarely mention insurance at all, if I sell an expensive item I charge the appropriate postage to cover myself and leave it at that, I don't explain myself as that might lead to buyers trying to argue to have the additional costs removed as they don't want it.

  • I wouldn't bother mentioning it. Insurance is for your benefit, not the buyer's.

Always makes me chuckle in listings when insurance is offered for extra cost and it says that if you don't take it up then they will not refund you if the item is lost or damaged in the post.

Thank you for all your answers.

I've added it to my costs, but didn't mention it in the listings

You do not need to mention it, or explain what it is, the parcel is covered if it gets lost/damaged to the value of the item. There is nothing to feel you are hiding, you are protecting the item for your buyer, and for yourself.

Good luck with your auction but beware - today someone has screwed me over for an expensive item that 'is not in the orginal box' and has one (easily replaced and not picture or noted in the listing) cable missing - and now I am £50 out of pocket in postage there and back as it needs insuring - as if I do not jump to their pathetic demands he will open a case that means eBay will take the money off me anyway. Just be careful, that is all I will say.

Many carriers have a lot of exclusions in their insurance for delicate or breakable items so check the small print. It needs to be well packed as claims for damage may fail if the carrier thinks it is inadequately protected even if the insurance covers it.
