Hi, approx a mth ago I smashed the screen of my iPhone. Wasn't insured through O2 and I think my house insurance only covers for theft . I stupidly ( I know now) took it to an independent guy to fix it costing me much less than Apple. A week later the screen appeared very dim. I've just taken it back to Apple and they won't even look at it ( even if I pay) as the phone has been opened by someone else. I've taken it back to the guy who replaced the screen and he said it can't possibly be his fault as he only touched the screen, never went near the circuit boad. He said he's never came across anything like this before and can't fix it either. Where as Apple said he most probably caused it when he opened it up. I'm just really panicking now I've got 14mths left in my contract with a phone that doesn't work. I'm not sure what I'm asking really as I can't prove the guy who fixed the screen caused the problem... Any thoughts would be great. Thanks:)
Nice to save.

Firstly you would need to show that the damage hasnt occurred through the repair.
If it has, then your action would be against the repairman for failing to carry out his duties with reasonable care and skill (providing that that is what happened of course).
Not sure who would be qualified to do this - except perhaps apple themselves.
You say the phone doesnt work but earlier in your post you just said it was very dim. Which one is it?You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Thanks for your reply. The phone is all in working order but it is that dark in the screen that I can't use it. In daylight I cannot see the screen at all but in a dark room I can just about see it. If I get a call I just swipe where I think the open button is and take a lucky dip as to who is calling me!
I'm just not sure how I go about proving that the repair guy did or didn't cause the damage as the guru in the Apple store said they would refuse to look at it point blank whether I pay or not.Nice to save.0 -
The guy who changed the screen is lying, I've replaced a number of phone screens including iPhone ones and it is very easy to cause damage to other parts of the phone if you are not careful.
However if the original smashed screen was caused by the phone being dropped it could have caused further internal damage that has gradually got worse and this is now a symptom of that. There's not really a way to tell without stripping the phone down to check for botched work or damage, even then unless there is something blindingly obvious it could be inconclusive as to what caused it.0 -
Thanks. I guess I'm just going to have it buy a new phone to see me through another year till my contract ends. An expensive lesson learned

If you're going to do that it is either worth selling the phone as a faulty for spares to make something back or follow a youtube video showing you how to strip the phone down to check for maybe a loose connection, the worst that can happen is the phone ends up completely unusable but you'd be no worse off0
