Best HDD DVD recorder now that will last

I have read other posts on this subject, some of which are out of date.
I've a Sony Bravia TV, HD ready, so if possible, would like excellent picture quality (I also enjoy watching DVD's - coz we can't get out to cinema much with kids). I'm not technically minded, but would like the best bit of kit at best price today - & that will last as technology updates. (Also, our 2 young kids like pressing buttons - so probably best not to go for Sony HXD870 for £300! I'd have to insure it against 'accidental damage! - & it's getting too pricey!)
Ideally I'd like to record Alisdair Cambell's diaries on BBC4 tonight. Anyone help?
