Quote for central heating repairs

We recently noticed that our radiators are heating up when the boiler is set to provide hot water but not heating. The gas engineer who came out to look at it says the problem is with the pump and valves attached to the hot water tank which are faulty.

I've had a quote to supply and fit a new 'Grundfoss efficiency rated A circulator pump' and a 'Honeywell 3 port valve' for £370 (plus an extra £20 if new pump valves are needed).

Does that sound like a fair price?

(I'm in a London suburb btw, I know that tends to push prices up a bit)

  • Quick google and it looks like those 2 parts cost about £200. You would need exact model numbers to check. So it looks like you are paying about £200 for the labour. You might save £50-£100 shopping around, but you are going to be charged for a half day at least. And as it is a small job you might struggle to get other quotes.

Also, if the person has already been out to find the fault and not charged for that, it really ain't unreasonable.

The gas "engineer" is talking out of his bottom as far as the pump is concerned. It has nothing to do with the pump but it will be the 3-port valve that is at fault. I can only assume that he's hoping to make a few more ££'s by unnecessarily replacing the pump. Was he a local independent guy or British Gasp by any chance? A more realistic price would be just over half what you have been quoted. Good luck :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi, thanks for the feedback.

It's a local independent engineer who we had recommended by a family member. He came out to service the boiler and do our gas safety certificate so I got him to have a look while he was here.

Jayyar - I think I might have misunderstood about the pump. There's been a leak from it so it does need to be replaced and I just assumed that was contributing to the problem with the heating.

Aaahh, right, in that case it may be not so excessive. Although I would still say it's a little on the steep side but then being in the north-east I have no idea what a reasonable labour rate would be for your area :)

about right in The Smoke if he's gonna have to drain the system, although you might be able to get it slightly cheaper
