Something's eating my Dahlia's

Hi
I have around six Giant Dahlia's in pots, they are flowering and have plenty of buds. The problem is that something is eating the leaves, huge chunks are being taken out and in many places a slime similar to that left by slugs is across some of the plants, but not all, even the highest leaves are being eaten around 5'
I have put in plenty of slug pellets as once I started to notice the problem I thought it may be slugs, but so far I haven't found one ? and I check evening and morning.
Is there anything else which has a liking for Dahlia ? and if so, what magic potion can I use, I tried a spray called "The ultimate bug killer" but all that has done is relieve me of £5
Thanks

Probably slugs or snails. Try putting some copper tape round the pots. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I have this problem with one of my dahlias in a raised bed on allotment. I put loads of slug pellets out but still doesn't stop something eating the leaves it must be slugs/snails0

Apparently earwigs have a penchant for munching dahlias. I have read that smearing vaseline or similar on the stem will stop them but have not yet tried it. Really should as I'm petrified of earwigs0
