For a long time I have been buying Tesco Value peanut butter. At 62p it's a good price and tastes lovely. I was in the store last week and thought I would stock up. Horror of horrors, they have changed it from a glass jar to plastic, and looking at the list of ingredients they have a new recipe and it now has palm oil in it. Yuk. I bought some cheap peanut butter from Aldi once to try. It had palm oil in it and it was horrible. So disappointed that Tesco have gone down this route. Won't be buying any and can't afford the more expensive variety, so no more peanut butter.

The Ch4 prog on what's in food showed palm oil to be a sticky thick orange gloopy substance.. they are putting it in more and more products now..
I didn't like any pre-made nut butters till I tried the ones fresh made in Wholefoods, which is just the nuts only.0 -
If you have a food processor you can make your own with peanuts and oil - preferably peanut oil.

Have to agree with Kirri here, pure peanut butter without any oil is the best without a doubt. Online or H&B do it for about a fiver for a big tub.0

I eat industrial quantities of the stuff, and it used to taste better than the full price brands. They've almost halved the sugar in the new stuff, which won't help, but I suppose I'll get used to it. Skimmed milk and low salt bread tasted horrible at first, but now I don't even notice. It's amazing what habituation can do.0

Would've been nice if you'd actually tried it before writing "yuk" in the title of a thread, perhaps.0

Many peanut butters have palm oil in them. I bet the old Tesco one did. It stops the peanut butter from separating out because palm oil is solid at room temperature.
There is one brand that doesn't have palm oil, and you have to stir it every time you use it because a good centimetre of clear peanut oil separates out onto the top of the butter within a day or so.
I don't know how Meridian manage to get their peanut butter to not separate - I can only think it is because the peanut skins absorb the oil and hold it in the butter. But it seems that if you want a butter without skins (I don't like the taste of the skin as it is bitter) and no palm oil, then you will have to stir it.0 -
For info', according to the ingredients lists on the websites, ASDA, Sainsbury's and now Tesco PB contain palm oil.
And, apart from any taste considerations, one should also be aware of the environmental damage palm oil production causes. If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

Vegetable oil may well be palm oil actually.:heart2: Do Something Amazing - Give Blood :heart2:

Palm oil production is greed-planting, planet-wrecking, botanic-fracking equivalent.
