How/When to Switch A Gas Supplier

I've never switched before and have been with BG for a year, so I now know how much I use in a year. I am moving from rented to a house I'm buying which is a bit bigger + cooking is on gas. I've checked the seller's current supplier and it is also BG.
I'd like to switch to (probably) the one without a standing charge... so, when/how do I switch?
No point switching here as I'm leaving. But at which point do I switch at the new house? Assuming I arrive and open up the box to get an initial reading, then phone that through to BG, do I then immediately switch? Online? Or what?

Yes you can switch as soon as you register as a customer of the present supplier at that address. This explains more.

Cheers... sounds daft, but I bought my last house years ago and was happy with who I was with (and switching wasn't commonplace), left there a few years back and have been renting/gasless since
What awful fonts they used in that link page!! Shocking readability ....
Looks like the MSE Energy Club (which I had no clue existed) http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cheapenergyclub would be helpful ... although not sure if I should join now .... or after my first switch.0 -

I remember your signature from that time:

I hope it worked out for you.0 -

Life took an unexpected and sudden turn ... bolt from the blue with elderly parents that took a long while to resolve.... and so I lost my way, but was "free" from commitments, which turned out to be handy. It's been a financial hit overall, but due to being "free" I'm happy to have been available, through life-ending and life-changing situations that piled one upon the other. And now, here I am, 2 years later to market than I expected.0 -

You can make your first switch through Cheap Energy Club (once you are ready to do so) after you move in. If you're not sure how much you will use, you can always estimate your costs within your account settings. If you have any problems setting up your account just drop us an email to energyclub@moneysavingexpert.com and will will do our best to help out.0
