Philips Lumea question about shaving

Hi,
I’ve been looking at the Philips Lumea and its positive reviews... I know it says you have to shave the area before treatment but has anyone use it without shaving and still got good results?
I want to use on my chin and I never shaved this area before, just tweezed the hairs out because I know if I started shaving hair will grow back much stronger and I’d be shaving tiny hairs along the way that don’t need to be shaved
thanks !

Hi, i think it is a myth that your hair grows back stronger with shaving. It's true it feels that way, because you're cutting a blunt edge on it. When you wax or tweeze or epilate, you pull the hair out from the root so when it regrows, you can feel the tip which is a lot finer.
In answer to your question, I have been looking at the lumea too and from what it says, it works by being attracted to and zapping the melanin in the hair. This then eventually kills the follicle. If you tweeze the hair, it will not be there anymore, therefore the device will have nothing left to zap!! So it won't work.

I don’t really like the idea of start shaving my face, in case the Lumea doesn’t work on me... but what I was thinking is that when the hair is shaved, the hair remains at skin level.. so wouldn’t be the same result if the hair was waxed or tweezed and then wait a couple of days until the new hair reaches the same skin level as when shaved??
in any case I have already ordered the Lumea and fingers crossed, I hope it works:o0 -

I see what you mean now. I imagine it should still work but I am not sure. I am dying to order one but am having to wait until end of July when my cc is paid in full. I keep thinking that if I order now though, I could be hair free pretty much before. I go on hol!!0 -

I’ll give it go...
I bought it on boots.com, it’s £50 off now, I got the latest one the SC2006/11 model... I paid £354 because of an additional 10% off when ordering online and I also had a £5 off voucher:p0 -
I have a lumea and was sent it to test last year and give my reviews on....a year on and I dont use it any more and to be honest it wasnt that great.
Very good if you have thick black hair ...but it just doesnt seem to recognise any other shade that lighter!
on the plus side it was pain free to use but I think you have to use it very regularly to keep the hair awayfrugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend0 -

I have the Lumea (think it's the same model that you have both ordered) and it has been amazing for me.
I have PCOS so pretty excessive hair growth and it has been completely eliminated on the areas that I have used it so far (bikini line, lip, underarm). I will point out, however, that I am the ideal 'type' for it i.e. fair skin and dark hair.
Regarding shaving - due to the fact that it works by being attracted to the pigment in the hairs, it will work if you don't shave. However, since it is essentially burning the hair, if you do not shave then you will be left with singed hair on the surface of the skin, as has happened on my bikini line a couple of times when I've mis-zapped!
I did my lip and shaved it, and it turned out fine. I shaved gently in the direction of the hair so it wasn't quite so harsh and then made sure i kept on top of the treatment with the lumea and it was never particularly noticeable, bearing in mind I have dark hair so it would be as bad as it can get really!
But, this is the first hair removal product that I have ever used that I have felt really helped - i now use on the treated areas monthly and I have almost zero regrowth, other than the odd hair that invariably gets missed now and again.
Hope that helps!0 -

This is amazing, thank you. I have PCOS too and I have hair everywhere...I can't tell you how much it has affected me and my self esteem. I am lucky in some ways that I don't have a great deal of hair on my chin or face but I get it all over my tummy (used to only be 'that' line) but now it is everywhere. I also have it on my nipples but not sure whether it can be used there.
Obviously I'll use it on my legs and bikini too and hope that. I see some improvement.
I am so pale, I am practically see through and my hair is dark too!!0 -

I totally know where you're coming from - it has been unbearable. I have PCOS but also tinnitus and they are both conditions that have a big impact on confidence and self esteem so it was/is a battle at times.
It may sound insignificant to some but this has honestly made a huge difference - I feel so much happier using it. It can be a little time consuming at times, especially if you're doing large areas like legs, but it really is worth what is, in reality, not an awful lot of effort. Also great to be in the comfort of your own home and to top it up at the rate of your own regrowth which I imagine is very fast as it is for me!
I'd just say don't be disheartened at first - for the first 8 weeks or so you will barely notice a difference at all, it's just shaving and zapping, shaving and zapping. And then all of a sudden you realise that nothing has grown back
Hope you love it as much as I do!0
