I thought it was 1cm per week and its from the bottom to the top of your womb/uterus.

    Taken from the Babycentre.co.uk website:

When you visit your midwife or doctor for antenatal care, she may measure your abdomen on the outside to check your baby's size and rate of growth. This measurement is taken from the upper edge of the pubic bone to the top of the uterus and is called the fundal height.

The tape measurements (in centimetres) should equal the number of weeks that you are pregnant within 2 centimetres -- but this measurement can vary depending on your size and shape.
    Fat and proud lol
  • It is a rough guide I measured 28cms at 24wks and was always ahead of myself lol but I was never checked for being big and baby came at 41wks weighing 8lbs half an ounce so wouldn't put too much emphasis on it tbh

it's only a very rough guide and isn't used everywhere (as it's so rough) but it's from the base to the top of the fundus (uterus) which I can feel quite clearly at 33 weeks but which earlier on isn't always easy to feel yourself if you don't know what you're looking for. It can be measured from as early as 12 weeks but often isn't measured until late 20s or even at all. It should always be done when you're lying down. It's roughly a cm per week but slows down later on in the pregnancy - there should be a graph in your notes that shows the curve of average plus and minus 1cm - if you're a long way outside that then they may suggest further scans. Babies go through growth spurts and resting periods though so if you are measured and it's outside the 'norm' there's no need to panic.

cor i should say its only a rough guide!! i measured 40 weeks at 32 weeks with my first and 38 weeks at 32 weeks. they gave up measuring me in the end lol funny though both mine were early.
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A

I was measured at 28 weeks when I was 35 weeks pregnant. Sent for a scan, being told I would probably be induced as the baby was obviously small etc. Very frightened.

My boy was born at 41 weeks weighing 9lb 10 so for me it wasn't a good indication of anything
Give me the boy until he's seven and i'll give you the man.

IN 15 yrs of midwifery practice, I have never used a tape measure yet! Prefer to use my hands, as we have to palpate anyway to check lie and presentation of baby (in latter weeks anyway). Seems to be something else for people to get anxious over if they are over, or under what they should be in cm's. And it's from the symphysis pubis to the fundus (top part) of the uterus.

I was told at around 32 weeks that my baby was small. I was measured whilst in hospital having my high blood pressure monitored. I had no worries about the size of my baby but the hospital insisted on monitoring it (send my blood pressure higher!! LOL). DS arrived and was 8lb 15oz. He's now 3 and over the 99.6th centile for height and weight!

Don't fret too much about it!!

I was way, way ahead of my weeks according to my measurements - I must've finished up at about 55 weeks pregnant lol Midwife kept saying 'oh you've got a bigun in there'. I was terrified cos my first was 9lb and she was quite big enough for me thankyou :o As it was, number two was 8.13 at 10 days overdue.....apparently I had a massive amount of water

I was expecting a 6.5-7lb baby as i was measuring small.... so 8lb 9oz was a bit of a shock!

    now expecting my second

I went for my 20 week scan and was told I was 27 weeks gone! but now at 38 weeks I am measuring 36cm...

    my body is weird!
