Single ticket?

Not sure if this is the correct place for this thread.

My nephew has been working in Japan on a 3yr contract which finishes in August. Last year he married a Japanese girl. Although he is currently looking for work in the UK, he hasn't got one yet and thinks he will have more of a chance if he is in the UK. If he can't get a job here, he'll go back to Japan to work. His wife will come over for a holiday with him, and if he is successful she'll go back and start her visa application. The uncertainty is that she doesn't have a leaving date and wondered if she could buy a single flight into the UK, without having a return ticket? This is frowned upon in Japan. She has investigated other avenues, one of which she was told requires her having £64000 in her bank account!!!

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If she enters the country on a visitors visa then she may arouse suspicion as a lack of return flight may suggest intention to remain. Why doesn't she buy a return, many airlines will rearrange the return journey for free or for a small fee.

Most airline tickets sell single tickets for the same price as return tickets so it makes sense to get a return ticket. Also, as already said, immigration would be more likely to ask lots of questions if she has no return ticket & any ambiguity wouldn't look good when she later applies for a visa. Why doesn't she give a return date on her ticket for (for example) a month after entering the country. Should your nephew get a job quickly, his wife could always bring her return flight forward (subject to flight availability & an admin fee) and start her visa application once home.
