shower mat got red spots

Morning - my clear plastic square shower mat (for inside the shower) is beginning to have bright red spots on the underside - the bit which is in contact with the shower tray - and I have no idea why. The spots don't rub/scrub/wash off and more are developing over time.

Has anyone any idea of 1) what they are and 2) what to do about them and 3) are they nasty???

It's just so weird!

PS - just noticed from the JL website that it's PVC and machine washable so will stick it in the washing machine this morning and see if that helps.

It's mildew. It's forming because the underside of your mat is permanently moist, with a nice bit of trapped bacteria being trapped under there from the grey water you create when you wash.

It needs regular lifting and washing if you really need it at all.

Many thanks, that makes perfect sense. We are only here at weekends for the next wee while so the mat lies there. Have got it in the washing machine now and will make sure that it's left hanging up in future.

Have now washed the mat and all but the two most red bits are away - I shall make sure it's washed every week.

Never seen red mildew before which is what threw me.

    Thanks again.

You are supposed to lift a shower mat up. to dry it after use, otherwise this is what happens. I learnt my lesson on this years ago, just pull it up and hang it over the bath side or the shower rail after you finish with it. It will then last for years
