Changing Door Handles

We would like to change the normal door handle on all interior doors to ones with a lock. Can it be done DIY? Are there any special tools needed for this?

Yes it can be done. You will need a drill, drill bits, chisels, hammer and a tape measure. Buy something like a 3 lever mortise sash lock with matching handles. Most have fitting instructions supplied with them (including what size drill bits)
You also need the measurement from the edge of your door to the centre of the hole where your handle goes through. This will determine what size lock you need.

You drill a series of holes in the door the same height as the lock then chisel it out so the lock body slides in. The metal plate then hits the side of the door when you slide it in. Draw around the metal plate with a sharp pencil and then chisel it out to the right depth, probably about 3-4mm.
The step by step instructions are usually supplied with the lock

It depends on how secure you want it and what your existing handles are like. If you have the round knobs they are a simple swap, such as:-
