Whitewashing fireplace bricks

I've been looking at this site... http://www.theyellowcapecod.com/2012/03/white-washed-brick-fireplacetutorial.html

They use a white latex paint, which upon digging around (as I'm not horribly well versed in paint info) is apparently emulsion paint.

I'd like to do this to my fireplace, as the previous owners have patched it up frequently with white material. The "whitewash" would make these patches blend in rather than stick out, and I think the look itself would suit my fireplace and my d!cor nicely.

So the question I then have to ask is this.... matt? silk? I am leaning towards matt, but it's obviously guesswork on my part.

Anyone done this? What did you use?
Saving, decluttering and doing alright.
