Just to add a couple of things:

All the Recorded Delivery items I have sent the 'Address Validated?' on the receipt is always 'N'

Does anyone know what this actually means? I took it that the computer system could not verify the address.
I think the PO can verify the address against the postcode but they normally by pass this so it prints out N. Presumably this is to speed up dealing with customers and shorten queues.
  • Hi All, RESULT!!!
Got a call back from the Royal Mail escalation team and I was told that the counter staff should have picked up on the fact that the address was not validated within their system (maybe for the reasons explained by previous poster!) and that RM will be sending me a cheque for the value of the item and the postage.
I was obviously very happy with this. I did get a bit of a telling off from the advisor who said it only takes a minute to check on RM website that addresses are valid and that I should do this in the future as they would not compensate me again for the same reason.

Just exactly where should I be verifying the address? I have never done it before. Sometimes I google the postcode to find out if the road exists but that doesn't tell me that the house number exists.
  • Hi Kalsha,
it's on the Royal Mail website- you can check an address by typing in part of it or by typing in the postcode - I think it's called the post code finder - hope this helps

Clicky, I use it for all of my items that go via RM after falling foul of exactly the same scenario

I sense check every address and this takes 10 minutes every morning, but it's well worth it. Simple examples, missing house numbers, missing road, two towns at opposite ends of the country, or simple things that might delay the item:
Is it High Street North, Newham, or High Street, North Newham, or Bridge Street East, Ham, or Bridge Street, East Ham, or worse examples where the road can be "North" or "South" in a suberb which can be either "North" or "South".
Sometimes I have seen totally nonsensical addresses and get denials from the seller because they wont admit they don't know their own address, or addresses in student blocks which are incomplete and the buyer then starts toi guess what their address might be! lol
