Can my sister borrow my car to drive?
We both have fully comp insurance on our own cars.
Both our policies state the following:
"The policyholder may also drive a motor car not belonging to the policyholder and not hired to the policyholder under a hire-purchase agreemnt or leased to the policyholder under a leasing agreement as long as the policyholder has the owners permission."
The above (in my opinion) seems to say that she can drive my car, however when i rang up my insurance (fortis) i'm advised that it would cost between £50 and £80 to put my sister on for a week (couldn't give me the exact amount computer system down)
why is this when her insurance seems to say she can drive other cars and so does mine?
very confused

there may be first of all a clause stating that you may drive any other car if you are aged 25+
also, when you drive other cars - you will only be covered for 3rd party damage by your insurance{Signature removed by Forum Team - if you are not sure why we have removed your signature please contact the Forum Team}0 -
What Lost said.
The £50-80 charge is to add your sister to your policy so she is covered fully comp under your policy, so your NCB would be affected if she stacked the car0 -
both over 25
only want 3rd party fire and theft as its only for a couple of days
i thought guy was telling me that there wouldnt be any insurance on the car unless we paid the £50 - £800 -

Be careful Adrock - you state you only want "third party fire and theft" .
The option to pay the additional premium offered by your current insurers is so that your sister can have the same cover on your policy as you have ie Fully Comp.
Her policy although also Comp will permit her (as you confirmed) to drive another vehicle other than the one she has insured - for third party risks. The important bit here is that is doesn't cover fire or theft !! whilst the vehicle is in the custody or control of your sister. So if sis borrows your car and has a prang, all claims against her from third parties are covered (not damage to YOUR car though) and neither will your car be covered for Fire or Theft, so if sister pops into a shop to buy some fags and upon her return finds that someone has nicked your motor, your up a gum tree without a paddle.0 -
i see
better probably to pay the £50 - £80
never realised it wouldnt cover fire and theft
thanks for that info0 -
It shouldn't be as expensive as that much, when I used to work at a brokers the cost was typically between £15-£25/week so long as the driver is roughly the same age/length of licence/claims/convictions etc.0

The real villain of the peace is not the insurance risk additional premium but the greedy intermediary mid term adjustment charges - they have to make a crust :rolleyes:0
