    Don't forget about Continuous Insurance Enforcement. If its uninsured, it needs to be SORN.

    Yeah I must say I didn't know about that, just Googled it so I know what it is now. It just makes sense to not renew straight away if you know you won't be driving until some time after the renewal date. I almost wish next year was here so I know for sure how much I'll be paying. I'm lucky that age is on my side, an at fault accident could put many new drivers off the road.

    If the car is left uninsured for a few days after the current policy expires and then insured then the OP need not worry about having to sorn the car for the few days.

    It takes weeks before you end up in trouble.

    And they first send you a warning letter. Only if you ignore the letter do you get the penalty fine.
