Renewal offer vs. best price from current insurer

Got my renewal advice from Admiral - £201.
Ran the same details through confused.com - Privilege @ £154 and Admiral @ £178.
After a lengthy call to Admiral, the operator told me 'the system is allowing me to make a discount' - £178.
He couldn't find my confused.com quote on his system.
I think I know why - I'd inadvertently put in the wrong dob (by 1 month) when I ran that quote. When I corrected and re-ran, it did NOT include the Admiral price.
So my lesson is to always use details that are not going to match on my current insurer's database, without affecting the validity of the quote, so that I can find out what their best price is, rather than their (frankly dishonest) renewal offer.
Having made it clear to Admiral that I thought it was unfair to try and sting me for an extra £23, I'm insuring elsewhere.
