Wireless modem on Virgin Media

Hi,

Please help!

I'm upgrading for my FIL, currently he has Virgin Media Broadband with a wired router. Upgrading to wireless router but having the new router still wired to the pc and hooking up a laptop wireless.

Managed to connect new wireless router ok and pinged it to make sure pc can read new router which it can.

BUT it cannot connect to the internet. I did a ping to bbc website and it timed out.

Phoned up Virgin Media but they are blaming it on the router! Then phoned up Virgin Media Tech support and they said it's probably the set top box still looking for the old router and that it needs to "refresh" to pick up new router. So I've switched off set top box and wireless router from mains for 5 minutes and then switch on set top box first and then router.

Still no luck!

I've searched here but read about spoofing mac addresses? Is there a easier solution?

When I plug in old router it still works fine and connects to the internet. The new router is Dynamode Systems - 54MB WIRELESS DSL/CABLE ROUTER and I did search to see if there is new firmware but cannot find.

Any advice/tips greatly appreciated!

TIA

Can you use the wired PC to access the internet?

Might be worth connecting the old router and checking/writing down any of the configuration settings on it's set-up pages and entering them into the new router.

MAC addresses should not be a problem if you have power cycled the STB and the router as it will pick the new router up when it comes on.

yes I turned both the set top box/modem and router off at the mains for 5 mins, but you think I should do it for few hours?

    thanks

you leave the router turned on and connected to the modem/set top box ,then you reboot the the modem/set top box and it should find the new mac address of the router and it should work or leave the router and modem/setop box turned on so it refreshes it self and finds the new mac address (this way will need it on for a few hours to do it,any thing upto and over 24hours)it used to take that long years ago!

I think you need to register the router with the STB, can you access the "start.ntl" registration page ??

    Thanks for all the advice.

I still have not managed to successfully connect to the internet with the new router.

I tried unplugging the set top box overnight but that still didn't work... :(

I spoke to Virgin Media Technical and they said that I need to register the MAC address of the new wireless router to the set top box but when I tried to do that via the Broadband Customer Services, they said the set top box is not compatible with wireless routers?!? Apparently, my FIL will have to upgrade to a different package to receive a set top box compatible with wireless routers!!

It's a Pace set top box provided when it was still under Blue yonder.

Does anyone know if this is true or their ploy to get my FIL to upgrade to a different package?

I bought the router from the Virgin Media site as well to ensure it was compatible...

    Thanks
