Washing machine fraying clothing....

I've owned my washing machine for four year from second hand (it came with the house).
Today when I took the clothes out of the wash, TWO items of clothing had about 3 foot of cotton attached which had "frayed" from the item during the wash.
I washed in exactly the same way as I have always done using exactly the same settings.
Any ideas what could have caused this and a way to remedy it?
Thanks .....

Had this once where a wire from a bra had come out and stuck in machine.
Stupid thing was, other than the damage, she had still worn the bra, without noticing it had no wire in it.
Having never worn a bra, I'm unsure if you should notice it support missing!

Did you put more clothes in than usual? They're more likely to tear them if the drum's a bit full.0

It's a bit late for the response but worst case, if there is a tear/rough part inside the machine barrel clothes can snag on it. Get a piece of old stocking, wrap it around your hand and pass it over the barrel surface to identify the damage. The stocking would snag immediately.
Once you find the tear, if any, you can try sanding it flat with sandpaper.
NOTE I've never actually done this b4!!
More likely perhaps it is getting snagged by opened zippers. Try zipping them up before washing and of course as jack pot suggested.0
