Supposed freebies for loft insulation
Save yourselves the time and energy (ho-ho) folks
1. British Gas expected me to clear out all the shredded 2 or 3 inches that was there (3 x attics in rambling old farmhouse I bought); I'd have had to pay someone to do and that would have cost nearly as much as new insulation
2. Npower said property didn't qualify as there was already 100mm there (there isn't, in some places it's bare, in others 2-3 inches shredded, and over about 2 sq feet there's 100mm)
3. "Mark" group (for "Warm-something) made appointment, cancelled it, reinstated it, cancelled it, re-made it. Assessor who turned up to that was annoyed I wasn't in at 8.30pm prev evening to take his call, was annoyed I didn't pick up his call on the a.m in question (I ran to phone but he rang off just as I got there and he didn't leave a message. Called him back but he didn't pick up), was annoyed that my ansaphone gives my middle name which is what everyone calls me, rather than the formality of my first name - and then said that the property was unsafe & he wouldn't send his team in ...because after 10 months of total renovations gutting and renovating it so that it's now close to completion- new roof, floors, ceilings, plumbing, wiring, plastering, bathrooms - the kitchen installer was there and kitchen half-built but not totally finished - therefore the house is "uninhabitable"! Told him full structural survey had deemed attic safe, is boarded + elec light - but no, I was to let him know when I'm living there and it'll then be a month before they deign to come. Pointed out that it'll be too late by then as with carpet down & everything else finished, last thing I want is mess & disturbance of insulation only happening then.
All this had involved months of arranging appointments and waiting for them to get back to me with their decisions.
Seems like anything they can do to wriggle out of giving freebies!
Sorry, rant over, feel better now!!

Sometimes it's simply worth the agro if it's worth it in the end! If they've messed you around that much, then maybe they don't care enough. If you have too much insulation you can't use the loft for storage unless you create a platform. Hope you get there in the end.1

Thing is Rooflover that most of this grant funding came to an end c2012; after that it became discretionary & only available from some companies, & only then if you meet certain conditions.
Had spent several months going thru it all with several companies, and nearing the end of the project now with some floors in, carpet shortly to go down, and moving in not far off, am not prepared to go thru any more aggro with a.n. other firm + don't have the time to do the whole application process again anyway. Plus I'm out of patience and energy! (4-5 hours kip a night for 10 months just aint enough, trust me!)
Edit - forgot to say that don't need any of the actual loft space for storage, as luckily there's a separate mini attic room for that with insulation just under the slates/felt.0
