Washing machine power lead too short, extending ideas?

I am potentially moving into somewhere where there is a utility room with washing machine connections. The problem is the power socket is on the opposite wall. It's rented, so having a new power plug put is in not an option unfortunately.
As is, the washing machine will not fit over to the other wall. From memory 10-12 feet diagonally opposite to where the machine would go.
Would a heavy duty extension lead be ok to use and basically have it routed from the power socket up and over a door frame, and down the wall (presumably put up with cable clip holder things to plug in the washing machine).
I'd look to go for the likes of a garden/power tool one, rated 13A. Something like this one
http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/electrical/extension-leads/Masterplug-2-Socket-Performance-Cassette-Reel-8m-MCP0813-2-MS-9290382
Which has the thermal cut off, rated 13A, and make sure it's fully unwound before using. I'd probably also throw on an RCD plug in the main plug socket for additional peace of mind.
Having goggled the forums and come across some threads of this very nature, I am aware that rewiring the washing machine would be an option as well, however I am concerned about the length needed, trailing wires if I go direct from machine to plug (either trailing on the floor, or stretched up to the plug from one side of the wall to the opposite side. Otherwise if enough was put on the machine, it could then be routed around the wall, over the door frame, and down to the plug, with cable clips (the ones you hammer in) to hold it against the wall.
Without actually talking to an electrician first, how safe is rewiring the washing machine with a very long cable on it? Say 8-10m to get up and over, estimated of course. Machine is not in warranty period so something of that nature isn't a concern. Otherwise, how possible is the extension cable idea.
Having been through google about this, I'm a bit nerved to realise that it's not a generally accepted thing to just put white goods on extension cables. I have my compact tumble dryer on a normal out of the shop white 4way with the under counter freezer. No issues, but it does make me think now about it all!
Thanks!

The main problem with using an extension lead is that many of them are cheaply made in China, and not really fit to run high power loads for any length of time.
Both washing machines and tumble dryers use a lot of power. If you're going to use an extension lead, make sure it's good quality and fully unwound. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0
