Equifax credit report

Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me?
I have an opportunity to buy a house as a shared ownership.
My mortgage application was declined because of one thing. It was a default payment for £81 on 1/11/2010 to a catalogue company. When I moved house the catalogue company was told my new address but they didn't send any statements or reminders. The account was given to Lowell Portfolio who did send me a letter asking for payment. I was shocked and immediately paid the amount owing also complaining about how I hadn't had any letters from the catalogue company.
I have contacted the catalogue company but they have no record of this.
I have contacted Lowell Portfolio but they refused to take the default off my credit report.
I have contacted Equifax and they said they will look into it.
This is incredibly frustrating and my only chance of buying my home is dashed because of this one small default.
Does anyone have any ideas about what else I could do?
Many thanks

Unfortunately you're not alone here. The credit industry and the CRAs are essentially unregulated in this respect (despite what other would say). Trivia and errors can have a devastating effect on some people and it's difficult to hold anyone to account - for the latter at any rate.
Pursue the debt collection parasites to start within then post a notice of correction to Equifax relating to this marker.
Longer term, avoid companies that deal with CRAs if it's feasible to do so. Obviously there's no choice when it comes to banks etc, but avoid catalogues and such like, and try and find utility companies and media providers that don't report. At the moment I think Sky and EDF are examples, but that could change. The fewer the number of companies reporting you to the CRAs, the less the chance that something will go wrong.0 -
Does the default show on all three CRA files?
If its only Equifax get a good broker who knows which mortgage companies possibly only search Experian."Killing Jesse James don't make you Jesse James"0 -
