Scottish Power DD increase.

Hi all,
We have just received a online message via our account that they're intending to increase the direct debit from our current price of £55pm to £89pm! We are in a one bedroom apartment with a decent rating of B but going from the bills alone we were only in debit by £4 after the winter period and so obviously this would've been eliminated with the next monthly payment as our usage would drop dramatically for the summer months.
I am aware of my options to ring them up and request for them to reduce this amount and if denied then to formally request it. However I was wondering if I am within my rights to cancel the DD (understand this would halt the DD discount) and just revert to having my bills sent via post and pay as and when?
Thanks in advance

Switching to Quarterly bills will probably be a tarriff change so you need to use a comparison site to ensure your current provider is the most competitive.0

I was anticipating that to be the case. Regardless, we only have 6 weeks left before the fix comes to an end and we are able to save by switching so I think that'll be the course of action from here.
Saying that, the DD price hike may have been in anticipation of the switch to their standard tariff however they won't be having my custom that far in the future.
From what I've read, Scottish Power seem to be the worst in regards to DD hikes after just the winter quarter.
Surely I am able to notify my bank not to accept the revised DD without written permission from myself and as such, keep it the same until we switch and then have the remainder owed paid via this method? If any at all as I anticipate a credit anyway.0
