Car insurance - auto to manual

I learned to drive in an automatic car in 2008, In 2013 I resat my test in an manual car. I bought a manual car and phoned my insurer who told me that they say no difference in a manual and auto license and insured the new car at a similar rate.

This insurer was Egg and they are moving out of the car insurance business, so they gave me a quote from direct line (sister company) when my inusrance was due for renewal (a poor one) - I decided to go elsewhere

Unfortunately 28 days before my insurance ceased I had a bad car scrape at home. I had moved house and the drive is awkward. I caused expensive cosmetic damage. Egg arranged for it to be fixed with minimal hassle and I was pleased. It cost me two years of my no claims . I would have had 5 years no claims without this incident

I chose Asda as the new insurer and paid the insurance 100% up front and asked for egg to send my no claims details to me, as Asda won't conact insurers. The insurance quote was generated on 2 years no claims - as I wasn't sure how it would work with the incident at the end of the insurance period . Egg must have an antiquated insurance system as they sent me a letter of 4 years no claims , then after a phone call, a further letter of 5 years no claims. I am still awaiting a manual letter of the correct amount

Asda then sent me an email saying - you have only had a driving license for a year and we want another £800 to insure you . I had already sent my driving license details - where the automatic license is clearly marked at previous entitlement history and the 5 year proof of no claims , I explained the incident and said I am waiting for the ' current no claims' But I am getting nowhere with them

I do understand that other companies may have different policies regarding manual/auto licenses - but I feel that I have been 100% honest and feel a bit hard done by.

Can anybody advise me? I would rather cancel the policy with Asda -in fact I don't actually care if I lose the money (£350 or so...) and just go to another insurance company .

Can I do that, I have never changed insurer before this. I am not even sure if I am currently insured+ although they have £350 of my money.

Hopefully someone can help, I need advise

thanks

Yes you can cancel your policy and take out another elsewhere.

(If you think they have voided the policy then don't drive till you get confirmation you have cover in place, and if they have voided the policy ensure any new insurer is told about this)
  • Thanks Quentin. I will phone around I'm not taking the risk of online submissions, - If I cancel am I likely to get my money back. As said - past caring really! Jusr want to pay up and be insured.

You should get some refund, though there will be cancellation charges to pay (and they will want the correct premium for the time you have been on cover)

(If they have voided the policy then there are certain circs when they can do so without paying you a refund, but cross that bridge if it comes)
  • So I will probably lose out big time. Quicker I cancel the better then!
  • for anyone that needs to know - nobody cares except Asda Insurance. called round a few companies - no issues - got insurered by nationwide

Cancelled ASDA. Expect to lose out on cancellation fees - but had no confidence in company.
