At 8am, they probably had 500 calls queing.

Wow Paul, thats astonishing. I have to say though, the staff I spoke to were calm and very helpful...must be a nightmare for them getting calls from idiots like me all day!

No..... (BTW it's a "British" Passport, not English.... :rotfl:Not sure the Welsh and Scots would be too happy if it was...)
one of the upshots from the Good Friday Agreement... If you're born in N. Ireland, you can have both...... Would say though, when travelling only use one and don't take both with you... Customs DO NOT like it !!

Just to let you know - Irish Passport Office will only do an emergancy passport on the day if flight is within 48 hours and you need to bring proof of same with you.
Noticed on the BBC news this morning that apparently Passport Office is so much chaos that Fast Track charge is being waived to allow Passports to be issued on time - tried to issue link herehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-27829953
    Hope this helps!

I think that's only for a replacement passport not a new Application?

Only applies to those "in the system" at present.. not new applications as far as I know (from what I've heard)

Thanks guys - I now have a dilemma - have managed to get an appt at passport office for Thursday, with guaranteed 7 day turnaround. What do you reckon...is it likely they will do it within 7 days. OR do I take an appt in Dublin on Friday for an irish passport. Could they give it to us there an then, does anyone know? (Dont mind if it takes all day). 10 wkg days for an irish one is right on the limit.
(Also forgot to say, cant get phone answered at irish passport office so cant ask questions!)

Yes, they will absolutely do it within 7 days. that wont be a problem.

All I'm going to say is good luck in getting your passport in such a short time OP.
Def don't go for an Irish passport ATM, as they are backlogged back to the 1920's ATM
My neighbour flies out to spain next Friday and has been waiting 9 weeks for her passports to be done. She's waiting on 3 - 1 adult and 2 children's. SHe's drove down to Dublin twice and still no luck!

British passports have also been on the news this past day or two regarding the backlog they have also, and how they are under pressure to get them all done. They've waived the charge for fast-track services, however that doesn't mean you'll get it any quicker.

You'll get it within 7 days guaranteed if you opt for fast track.

Also, the UK passport office have processed 1 million passport applications since the start of April, of which 97% were handled within the published timescale.

Also, you can apply for a new passport from 9 months before it expires so there is no need to leave it to the last minute.
