I'm on VM (not NTL) and it seems that if I re-boot the modem I nearly always (not quite every time) get a different IP address. Are they changing something?
You must be on Virgin National (ADSL) which they no longer sell. VM cable works as I've indicated.

That wouldn't work, would it? The IP address is assigned on the outward facing connection.
It does. The VM modem is a cable device and the allocated IP is assigned to on the router (or PC if no router) it connects to. I was on cable for quite a while and know how it works.

Although VM IPs are dynamic they are what is called "sticky" in that power cycling the router will not normally get you a different IP - only presenting the system with a different MAC (ie a different router or one with a spoofed MAC) will achieve that. IMO it's quite likely that the past infections are the reason for the IP being blocked as many viruses result in the connectuion being used to generate spam.

If you have a modem and router then you may find an option to change the MAC in the router GUI. If you have a VM Superhub the only way you'd be able to change it is by putting it in modem mode and connecing your own router.

You probably require a good antivirus as well.

I use NOD 32 and Malwarebytes. Good enough?

most of the spam blacklists tend to be blocking servers from sending mails.

It means if you run a server at home you may have problems with other mail servers accepting you mail.

But if you dont run your own server it shouldn't affect you at all.

besides, there is a blacklist that contains all dynamic ips. So anyone who doesn't have a static ip will always be blacklisted.
Which makes it difficult to run a mail server on a dynamic ip

Who is your email provider? It's their IP address your mail is coming from - not your own. It's unlikely (say) Hotmail have had their IP address blacklisted.

It's not uncommon for residential IP addresses (i.e. those used by consumer ISPs and assigned to retail customers) to be blocked, because it's very likely it is spam email being sent out - how many people run their own email server at home vs those who's PC's are infected.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
