urgent advice re cash discounts

i need some urgent advice please. i have had new double glazing and when one of the sales reps came round i asked about any discount for paying cash rather than finance / cc. anyway head office call me with a price but it isn't as low as one of the quotes. later on i get an email asking who we have gone with and what price and they can beat it and because this company is part of the double glazing ombudsman scheme i decided to with them. now the installation is almost complete and there has been problem after problem i have spoken to another firm who have spelled out that it sounds like the job has gone through the back door and i don't have any paperwork despite me repeatedly emailing asking for a proper and headed invoice. I have paid £100 on credit card, another balance has been transferred but i still owe roughly half. do i withhold payment until certificates and guarantee are provided ? what if they refuse ? i was happy to pay cash for a discount but never thought for a minute it would mean that I wouldn't get the certificates and guarantee. i feel very very worried now and would really appreciate any advice.

Well, to be blunt - if the job isn't finished how could they supply certificates to confirm that it's been completed correctly? When I had a new window fitted a couple of years ago it took about 6 weeks after completion for the paperwork to get to FENSA and the certificates to be issued.

thats a fair point ! its more that i don't have anything in writing other than emails i don't have a quote or invoice or terms & conditions. I'm worried that if i pay the full balance tomorrow and then don't receive the guarantee there's then nothing I can do about it ??

Then, don't pay until you are fully satisfied the job has been completed satisfactorily. Retain some money until you are in possession of invoice, terms & conditions, and are satisfied they are what you agreed. Do not be leant on, do not be pressurised.

this is what I plan to do but i'm just worried that by having accepted the quote i have somehow implied that i knew and accepted that the work was through the back door and therefore no certificates or guarantee.
