urgent advice re discount for cash

i need some urgent advice please. i have had new double glazing and when one of the sales reps came round i asked about any discount for paying cash rather than finance / cc. anyway head office call me with a price but it isn't as low as one of the quotes. later on i get an email asking who we have gone with and what price and they can beat it and because this company is part of the double glazing ombudsman scheme i decided to with them. now the installation is almost complete and there has been problem after problem i have spoken to another firm who have spelled out that it sounds like the job has gone through the back door and i don't have any paperwork despite me repeatedly emailing asking for a proper and headed invoice. I have paid £100 on credit card, another balance has been transferred but i still owe roughly half. do i withhold payment until certificates and guarantee are provided ? what if they refuse ? i was happy to pay cash for a discount but never thought for a minute it would mean that I wouldn't get the certificates and guarantee. i feel very very worried now and would really appreciate any advice.

Why did you think they gave you a discount for cash?

Could you be any less helpful?

Because they don't have to pay the transaction fees for say a credit card for example?

OP you need to tell them you need the paperwork before the bill will be settled. The fact you have that first £100 on credit card was a good move - that keeps you potentially covered for the whole amount in any case.

thanks visidigi - exactly a credit card transaction fee is a couple of percent and with cash opposed to finance packages they get the money all at once instead of monthly. So I shall insist on paperwork before settling.

It's not such a stupid comment. The biggest discount would have been if you'd taken their finance option, for which the rep would have got more commission.

OP, of course you still need the certificates and guarantees, don't hand over the rest of the payment until you get them.

I would suggest that the only reason for a substantial cash discount is that the job is being put through "off the books" to defraud HMRC. In which case the company is not going to provide any paperwork that may incriminate them.

In the end you get what you pay for.

As visidigi said, and you agreed was a good course of action previously.

If you have no paperwork and no agreement was signed just don't pay up as they have no paperwork to prove you owe them anything ;-)
