Where in Italy for a long weekend?

We are thinking of going to Italy for a long weekend in August (4 days 3 nights), can anyone recommend where to go with lots to see/do?

Thanks

Kel

Milan can be very hot in August, and the milanese leave which means good hotel prices. Did an August weekend some years ago, Friday to Monday, Friday saw Milan, Saturday day trip to Venice by train booked in advance, Sunday trip to Lake Lugano by train and Monday Lake Como before the last flight back

Venice will probably be packed out, as you are in the height of the season, where most Italian businesses close down.
Coastal resorts will also be chaotic, so would suggest you travel to a more country area. Try places like Verona, where you can travel into to Venice for a day trip. Or hire a car and explore the area.
Suggest you hire a car, as then you can make your own itinery, but remember, that many hotels etc can be fully booked during that period.
With restaurants, that are normally packed with the locals/workers during July etc., for the fixed price menu of around 10/20Euro pp, these normally disappear as they make all their money from the August trading.

I'd second Verona, there's plenty to see and do and you can easily get to Lake Garda from there as well as Venice. When I went I used public transport to get around, no problem. Vicenza was good too. However, I believe they have an opera festival in Verona at that time of the year so may not be the best time to go.

I think August is when a lot of Italians take their holidays so places will be packed and, as lovesgshp mentioned, many businesses will be closed. You could consider one of the islands - Sardinia is gorgeous, and Sicily, too.

    Poor Saint Mark!

If your holiday ends in Milan, Leonardo's is a good place for your last supper: don't forget to call ahead for a reservation.
