180 day for PayPal cases

  • In theory Paypal cases have always been allowed up to 180 days, you just had to know how.

I believe this is the reason for the extension, chargebacks cost Paypal money, without seller protection it's a £14 fee for you but Paypal is charged more than that by the CC company so CS said in the past.

So if they extend the protection they'll save money in chargebacks.

Yes, "in theory", but those who did so usually lost their PayPal accounts, I understand.

If you read Paypals T&C's regarding this it's very much up to the buyer to follow a fairly rigid procedure to get a refund in the 180 days anyway, as far as I can gather they must escalate on a certain day after filing a dispute and must have tried to resolve the issue with the seller first also there will be no system notifications to tell them when to do so.

The 180 also only applies to Registered UK buyers who are resident in the UK. Everyone else still gets the standard number of days.

Finally lets face it how many users of Paypal actually read all the T&C's anyway? We constantly get questions on this and loads of other forums from sellers complaining about the 180 day charge back on cards but PP seller protection says all that is needed is proof of despatch, not even delivery, to successfully defend against it. that's why we always say, and I'm sure it's in the sticky "Keep your COPS / POPS for 180 days".

Does this 180 days apply to any other retailers offering PayPal as a payment method?

so if i sell something, can the buyer than claim at 179 days that they didn't receive it claiming it got lost in the post?! Could I still claim from RM after that amount of time? Also is this going to be some kind of warranty scheme if I sell something that fails after 4 months could the buyer then get their money back for a faulty item? Things are sold second hand, yes they have to be working when received but there is no guarantee that they will work 4 months later.

This is a PayPal change of terms not an eBay one, so it will apply to all PayPal payments.

RM claims must be submitted within 80 calendar days of posting.

But now buyers can do SNAD cases within the 180 days?
