Gap between MOT tests - possible?

Hi
My car is fully taxed and insured until February 2015.

Its MOT is due on 28th July 2014. I will be on holiday from 26th July for 3 weeks. The car will not be driven and will be stored in my garage. Will it be OK to have it done when I get back, week of 18th August?

I know if it isn't taxed I have to get a SORN and wondered if there was a similar form for MOT gap.

Thanks, aeb

You can do as you ask. But will only legally be able to drive it to a booked MOT on your return.

Or you can get it done prior to your hols, and the expiry date will still be 28/7/15 meaning no issues of driving with no MOT,

This will all be set out on your current MOT cert

You can do it 28 days before and they add the extra time on.

So take it for the MOT on the 1st or after and the new MOT will still be valid unti the 28th next year.

You can do it [STRIKE]28 days[/STRIKE] one month before and they add the extra time on.

So take it for the MOT on the [STRIKE]1st[/STRIKE] 29th June or after and the new MOT will still be valid until the 28th July next year.

Check towards the bottom of your MOT certificate. It gives the earliest date that you can get a new MOT and preserve the expiry date.

Thanks for all the help. As suggested I looked at the cert. I thought it was 14 days before not one month so that was really helpful, thanks.

I shall take it in the first week of July when the children are still at school. Taking 6 children under 10 in the holidays and having to hang around the garage for an hour is not fun. After my holiday my mum can stay at home with them hence my idea of delaying it but much better done in advance.

    Thanks, aeb

That's odd, I thought the no MOT=no insurance squad would have been on .Perhaps they are on holiday.

Out of interest, is the earliest date the 28th or 29th of June?

The OP wouldnt need to worry about that. Going on holiday and leaving a car with no MOT will cause the earth to end :)
