sponsered events for charity...

sorry if this has been mentioned before, but this is my first visit to the charity board....And I'm afraid I'm going to moan ......

I visited a local charity recently as they were advertising for 'volunteers' to abseil down a cliff face, this is something I have done a few times and thought I would offer my services. I has given a sheet to read and told I would have to pay 25 Pound*. Fair enough I thought, then she asked if I would sign the form, which I actually decided to read first...it stated that you had to raise a minimum of 250 pound, and if you didn't you had to make up the difference yourself. Obviously I wasn't prepared to leave myself open to the financial risk and decided not to bother.

My point is, why aren't some charities grateful for what you can raise anymore? Why do they set compulsory amounts? And don't get me started on the expensive treks to Peru or cycle across Africa type events. Why don't we sponsor people to do useful things anymore? Why don't kids do 'sponsored litter picks' or 'sponsored tree plantings' ?

Mine have come home from school with a form to be sponsored for 'scootering' around the playground a few times - and we're expected to cough up a fiver each.....makes me feel very uncharitable...

I don't know what the costs of organising an abseil are, but that would be part of the reason. Even if £25 each would cover it, they need each participant to raise more than this, to avoid having a lot of people who just want the thrill of abseiling down a cliff so they barely turn a profit on the day.

I'm using Linux at the mo so I can't type you through this exactly, but if you go Start, Control Panel, there will be something in there for keyboards, and you need to make sure that ALL the options in there are set to UK English.
