Where to get contents insurance after being refused due to claims?

Options
My old house insurance wouldn't renew my contents insurance due to 2 claims in a a short space of time for accidental damage. Been with same company for 15 years!! Tried to get it with another company my housing gave me, but refused due to the claims!! (They were repaired!) Does anyone know of a company I could go with? Thanks

See if a local broker (not swinton) can help,(though you do have to disclose the refusal to renew as well as the claims)

I don't believe you do in this case.

An insurer 'refusing to insure' and 'declining to quote' are two very different things.

The former usually relates to breaches of contract on the part of the consumer. Unless the claims were fraudulent, or the insurance was cancelled due to non-disclosure, this wouldn't apply.

The latter (which this sounds like) relates to a particular insurer's underwriting crtieria. If an insurer's underwriting criteria doesn't cover people with multiple claims, that is not a refusal of insurance - it is just that the proposer doesn't meet the criteria.

If I tried to get a quote from SAGA, they'd refuse me because I'm not 50+ - that's not considered to be a refusal.

    I don't believe that this isn't a problem that a comparison engine can't handle.

The OP says that his insurer "won't renew" the policy.

The question asked is (usually) along the lines of "have you ever had an insurer cancel/refuse to renew/declared null and void?"

    Different insurers ask different questions.

A broker will know whether or not the refusal to renew needs to be disclosed with any particular insurer that is prepared to offer cover despite the claim history putting others off that the OP has tried.

I was told they not renew it by letter. When I phoned to ask why, that is when they said because of the claims.

Filled in forms for somewhere else and they ask why not renewed, I explained why. Letter back saying will not do it because of previous claims.

Filling out forms on line are too complicated, I would prefer to phone somewhere but no idea!

Most online insurers also allow you to phone for a quote.

(And a local broker will be in your phone book)

I do believe that you need to declare this.

If it was simply a case that the insurer no longer covered eg your postcode, property type then it probably wouldn't be an issue for future insurers.

As it is down to your claims history, you may have to go with a specialist although some mainstream insurers might consider - perhaps with a higher excess.

Are these the only 2 claims you have had in the past 3 - 5 years?

Usually 3 claims or more within 3 years can result in a decline to cover.

    You could try
