One off share sale transaction?

Options
Hi all,

I have a share certificate in hand for 1500 shares at approx £2 each, so £3k worth.

I want to sell them soon, but really wanted to do so without the hassle of opening an onlione account.

Does anyone know if HSBC deal with this as an over the counter service?

If not, what's my best option?

Thanks for your time.

I know that. I want to know how to sell the shares. I don't want to deal with computershare if I don't have to. I'd like to do this on the high street. Is that not possible then?

You can't litterally walk into a 'shop' on the high street and sell them. I assume you mean a physical share certificate? You must have 'signed up' with someone to get hold of the shares in the first place? Whoever you sell through will need to make sure you are the rightfull owner, so you will need to deal through an account of some sort I would imagine.

I don't think you'll be able to deal with this on the highstreet, HSBC will direct you towards their online share dealing service (which you could sign up for on the high street, but would still have to deal online via an account)

It does look like Computershare will let you deal in certificated shares over the phone/by post without an account, more details here.

That's true now, but 20 years ago you could walk into most high street banks with a share certificate and some id and they would sell them for you. That may be what OP is thinking of.

Nowadays as Chargem says, you can generally sell certificated shares through the company's registrar provided you are at still at the address they have. It not the cheapest way, but you can probably do it online at a slightly better rate than by phone or post.

However, don't try it if you can't subsequently produce the correct certificate in your name and address by settlement day, as it will then cost you a small fortune!

Yep, so I'm a bit out of date! ;)

Thanks for the advice all. Will sit on the certificate until the share price recovers a little (ex-dividend yesterday), then call computerserve.

Check the charges though, you can set up an account with someone like x-o and pay less. Difference could be £50 so see waht computerserve charge initially.
