Urgent advice needed - who fits an upstand ?

Hello
Im in urgent need of some advice please ! Im going to have a new kitchen but first am having new double glazing. The bottom of My old kitchen window was at the same level as the sink unit with a row of tiles inbetween. I asked for the installers to create an upstand and they have fitted a smaller window with a course of bricks underneath. They are saying that this is an upstand and that the kitchen fitters will use timber to box it in and tile it. This is not what i was expecting at all to me its a course of bricks that makes the window slightly higher but i was expecting an actual physical thing for £150 not just four bricks underneath. Does anyone have any advice ? Is this normal practice or has there been a miscommunication ?

Thanks so much in advance

  • The upstand itself should be fitted with the new kitchen when the time comes. The window installers have simply made a space for it under the window by raising the height.

It sounds like you have had some kind of miscommunication, as I would have expected them to cover the bricks with plaster so the wall is properly finished. Did you discuss with them what the finish would be?

Thank you so much for the reply ! A finish wasnt agreed i just assumed that some kind of box / step would be built and that it would be plastered and or tiled when kitchen was being installed. Now im wondering if i should ask to have a window sill put in and then the upstand can be created around that when the kitchen is fitted or is that not a good idea ?

The window fitters have created that 'space', how you finish it then is down to you when the kitchen is done (remember the windows fitters 'may not' be plasterers) but instead would have that done with the rest of the kitchen.. a general builder \ fitter \ joiner would be able to add a sill after then kitchen worktop & upstand has been fitted as they would know the space available and whether you want a wooden \ mdf or Upvc style window sill using. Most window fitters would leave what is there unless you agree otherwise..
