How does everyone else organise their wardrobe? Do you keep dresses together, suits, tops, trousers and skirts or is it better to group by colour?

I store in outfits. ie each coat and jacket has its own trousers or skirt on the same hanger. Tops are folded and stored on the shelf above.

Thanks also for the link Aussielass.

I've decided to try and buy no new clothes this year, apart from underwear, shoes, an outfit for a wedding, and possibly a winter coat.

Done well - haven't needed underwear, bought a pair of brand new Converses from eBay, and some smart and casual clothes from charity shops.

I pack away my summer and winter wardrobes at the end of the seasons, into vacuum bags, and into the loft. That way, when they come out again, it's like a who new set of clothes.

DH and I share a wardrobe in our room, so I put my *everyday* clothes in there. Smarter, or less used clothes go in the wardrobe in the spare room.

  • I love clothes:D

If I need something clotheswise then I can be quite a snob and would spend the extra money and buy quality and know it will last. I love M&S Per Una range but dont like their prices. If I need a skirt, suit, jeans or trousers, I tend to go to the M&S outlets and purchase at a fraction of the cost. For instance a few weeks back OH bought me 2 Per Una skirts from Thurrock M&S outlet for less than £15...these were both tagged at £45 each:eek:    They are classic long length skirt (I am 5 foot 10) and will last probably forever!

I do have lots of clothes, many that are too big for me now, so have been flogging on Ebay. When I worked I had to wear a suit but now they are too big and I have made a killing on Ebay as they were mainly designer stuff;)

My other weakness is handbags and purses:o ...luckily I have a good selection of designers and styles that will go with just about any outfit. My mum and sister are forever sending me their old (used once) stuff:rolleyes:

Shoes are not a problem. I love Dr Martins and have an old faithful few pairs. I also have my Ugg boots (they were dear) but they have been worn more than anything else I have:D ...well thats my excuse!

If I had to choose a wardrobe with minimal amounts, I would choose:

A good cut trouser suit (MW)
    3 good shirts
    2 classic cut skirts
    Jumper
    Cardigan
    Decent pair of jeans
    2 casual tops
    Decent Coat & Shoes

PP I agree about buying quality; I used to spend a lot of money on my suits, less on blouses. I think its possible to get away with cheap skirts and maybe even cheap(ish) trousers if you can get the right fit for you, but a cheap jacket will always look cheap.

Handbags I love, and shoes - well, not sure I should admit to this, but at one time I had over 60 pairs of shoes! I have a much more modest number now that I dont go out to work
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Hi, I have a pair of black trousers for work and a few tops. A couple of pairs of jeans for the weekend.
I like the clothing of the 40s and early 50s and own a few vintage dresses and make 40s style dresses for weekends and special occassions. I have a classic black coat that I bought in 1988 that has years left in it yet :) and a pair or doc martins that Ive had for 10 years. I have a black evening dress from the 30s that my mum bought for me when I was 18, Im 40.
I dont spend alot on clothes for myself or my kids, kids clothes I will usually pick up in tescos ,asda or ebay. My teenager lives in army surplus and has one pair of para boots every year (after all those years of clarks shoes).
My 4 year old still gets clarks shoes. leather in winter, canvas in summer and a pair of wellies.
DH is not worried about fashion either an also likes 40s style so has a jeans etc for everyday and a couple of nice suits, jackets trousers and shirts that will last forever and never go out of fashion :)

I have 2 friends who are OS when it comes to clothes. The first moved into her massive detached (but in serious need of renovation )house with her hubby about 8 years ago. 6 weeks later he upped and left her for a floozy. She has single handedly raised 2 kids and renovated the house working part time jobs to fit around the kids. She is very make do and mend and a lot of her clothes are very 80's still and very faded. The other friend has the most extensive wardrobe of anyone I know. SHe has a really well paid job but she never wastes a penny . All her clothes are from charity shops or clothes swaps. She borrows items like special occasion wear (for parties and weddings etc). She always looks very well turned out and spends hardly anything - and she has always been like this. She was like it with her kids too. She gets a bit of stick from her work colleagues, but she is the one sat in a beautiful 5 bedroomed detached house with no mortgage, whilst they - on the same wages and with hubby's who earn more are still struggling to pay for much smaller homes and are massively in debt. When I look at friend1 and 2, there is a massive lesson to be learned! I am not as OS as these 2, but I do only buy in the sales or from factory shops (sadly diminished around our way now due to manufacturing in the far east). I have things that I wear to death, and then other items that I never wear.

I'm not very OS around clothes but I am seriously cheap! I do love clothes and seem to collect them. Everything apart from 1 or 2 things I couldn't resist (and wear all the time to get my money's worth) is from Primark, New Look sale (brilliant for basics that wash and wear well and don't date), charity shops or homemade for literally pennies. Trousers I tend to get from Ebay as my legs are so ridiculously long I have to go to specialist places - Topshop and DP Tall are ok but the choice is so crap I never find anything I like. I get fed up of stuff very quickly and like to have a few fashion items but even considering how many clothes I go through I bet I spend a fraction of what my friends spend a year - a friend of mine spent £200ish on an outfit for a wedding the other week and it was nothing particularly special although lovely whereas I went to a big christening a while ago and wore a really classy and classic black and white dress from Primark which was £8 and will do me many more functions in the future.

Kezz, what kind of patterns do you use for your 40s dresses? And where do you get the fabric for them?

Do need to buy good bras though and still don't seem to have got this one right.

https://www.brastop.com! They are fab - they sell end of ranges very cheaply, but still reputable brands. You *do* need to know your correct size though (don't *ever* get measured at M&S!)

I have 2 double and 1 single wardrobe for my clothes but I wear the same stuff all the time. My problem is that I don't like to "waste" clothes by getting rid of them although I know I'll never wear them again. I read that people wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time and it's so true. I'm going to have a clear out after reading this post.
