Unruly grass along fence

We have a fence that runs down the side if our garden. All is good apart from grass growing along it both from our side and our neighbours. It just grows underneath and decides to grow up one side or both. Has anyone here implemented something to either prevent our make this as maintenance free as possible.
From our side I suppose we could put down some flag stones but it would still be an issue when our neighbours grass grows under. We would still have to get the strimmer out.
Many thanks,
C
