It doesn't mention it at all.
Yes, that is generally OK for SSP purposes.

However, for company sick pay the employer can have whatever requirements they like.

True - but as the contract doesn't mention it (as per the top quote) they're on shaky ground to start demanding it after the fact.

But it is "their policy" (see the OP).

An employment "contract" is far more than just a piece of paper with the word contract at the top. It may well be written somewhere in an employee handbook or similar.....

Heaven forbid someone should genuinely be ill....:(
Being genuinely ill for just a day is very rare amongst people who are self employed or get no pay for days off, but quite common with people who get full sick pay.

Being genuinely ill for a day, while quite rare in your personal experience, is in fact not uncommon for people suffering from - and previously diagnosed with - chronic inflammatory bowel disease.

Being judgemental is, sadly, quite common in people who inhabit online forums.

However much it grates Bantex may have a point.....not saying your friend was pulling a fast one.

If you're going to be receiving SSP you will think twice about having time off than if you received full pay. Especially if you get no pay for 3 days

Someone I worked with once had a full six months off simply because, in the words of her best friend, she couldn't face coming in. Strangely enough the day her half pay would have kicked in, she came back.

That would fall under the disability discrimmination act, so is totally different from a person without a disability taking the odd days sickie.

Let's be honest. It wasn't a valid point, or indeed a worthwhile contribution to the thread. The post said more about the person making it than anything else.

If you're going to be receiving SSP you will think twice about having time off than if you received full pay. Especially if you get no pay for 3 days

You will think twice about going into work if you're curled up in absolute agony, haven't slept, and suffering from extreme and continuous D&V.

I will repeat, for those who have decided to accuse everyone who has a day off of lead-swinging. My friend has a medically-diagnosed condition. Attacks come with no warning (and it's not the case that certain foods trigger them, so he can't do anything there). The attacks are completely debilitating, lasting between 24-48 hours at a time.

Someone I worked with once had a full six months off simply because, in the words of her best friend, she couldn't face coming in. Strangely enough the day her half pay would have kicked in, she came back.

The singular form of 'data' is not 'anecdote'.

Regardless of whether sick pay was part of the equation, in the midst of an attack, my friend isn't thinking about how they can play the system. They are an otherwise high-performing employee, always getting good reviews and supporting the rest of their team. But they have a medical condition that means they have the odd day off here and there.

Because of their employer's policy, they're being asked to get a private note and pay £15 for the privilege.

Does this sound fair to you? Or, heaven forbid, should we accept the fact that world isn't black and white - it's a little more nuanced - and maybe a degree of common sense should be employed?

Just seen your reply and I apologise about what I said just now. Heat of the moment/difficult to gauge emotions online/me being a eedjit, etc.

    Thanks

Could your friend pay for a letter which explains to his employer that his condition is such that short periods of sickness are likely and therefore one letter will cover any other days off that he may require in the future?

You need to follow the forum rules and now accuse me of all sorts of things and and vow never to come back because everyone is judgemental etc etc ;)
