Pension Lump sum

Hi, My husband passed away on 12th July last year and I am receiving £122.28 per month spouses pension. Why can I not get this in a lump sum? It would help pay for a headstone etc Thanks

  • Hi Karen

Sorry to hear. Was your late husband already in receipt of his pension when he passed away and do you know what type of pension this is?

  • Yes he had been getting his pension for 14years. I only know it is a work related pension which he got as a package when made redundant.

Because it's a pension fund not a funeral insurance policy. Horses for courses.
Free the dunston one next time too.

Oh ok. Unfortunately, that type of pension typically only pays a dependent pension after that period. Have you enquired about state bereavement payment?

"If your husband, wife or civil partner has died you may be able to get Bereavement Payment: a one-off, tax-free, lump-sum payment of £2,000." See gov.uk for more information.

It must be of help to you on a monthly basis. If you don't need it, put it away and in 12 months or so, buy the headstone,
you should be able to get one for that much ie £1200 .
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

They should not be taking it all off you. You may wish to check with the benefits agency to see why that is the case.

Would you wish to check your situation by posting on the Benefits Board?
  • Hi Karen,

My sincere condolences for your loss.

I haven't any advice in respect of your pension, but it did occur to me that there are charitable trusts which exist to help those in need. It might be worth checking to see whether your local library has any info on charitable trusts in your own location.
