payment processed yet address incomplete

Hello all, I'm hoping this is a quick and easy one for someone! How important is the address information when making an online 'card not present' transaction? My organisation recently received a donation from a customer who noticed halfway through that his address was incomplete. The donation was made despite this. He has had a confirmation from paypal showing incomplete address details. Can anyone advise who is at fault here, if anyone, or is it standard practice that the address info isn't as important? I've been directed to quite a few links etc explaining payment processing however it isn't clear or jargon free enough for explanation. Many thanks!

    Are you required to post anything to him?

    If not then I don't think it matters?
  • Thanks for your reply Rash - we're not posting anything to him however he's querying how we can take a payment (or how his bank can authorise a payment) despite incorrect address info being provided.

    As far as I know, Paypal take the money from his account then send it to you, Paypal is like another layer in the transaction, makes it like two separate transactions.

    As above ... it's a transaction from one account to another. (In this case with Paypal as the middleman). So ...

    Account+SortCode ---> Paypal ---> Account+SortCode

    ... thus no address details needed at all.

    (A direct transfer would simply cut out the Paypal segment).
  • Thanks Rash and Bod1467 - does that mean that billing address in these instances is a bit of a red herring?

    It only matters if you're sending them something by post, then you actually have things like Paypal Verified Address, I'm pretty sure things like that have an impact on the cover/guarantee that they offer to both sellers and buyers so it's worth checking into that if you're going to send anything to Paypal buyers.

    It's worth noting that Paypal usually side with the buyer in disputes from what I've experienced and from what I've heard from others.

    The billing address they send to the seller to use if required. Paypal have all they want from the buyer, held in the account information.
    As the other chaps have said, it doesn't matter for the money to change hands.
