Phone/laptop sync issue

Hi all,
I’ve got an issue syncing between my phone and laptop. Currently (and for years now) I’ve used outlook for all my emails (3 different accounts), contacts, and calendar. However recently I’ve had issues syncing with my HTC android phone (it worked ok for about a year of this new phone, but synced previous phones fine). I use HTC sync manager (which automatically comes up), but I’ve noticed that sometimes there a discrepancies between my phone and laptop in terms of calendar and contact details.
Yes I’ve made sure latest version of sync software is on both my laptop and phone.
What I’m after is a solution to my problem rather than necessarily a fix to my existing system. What I mean by that is I want an effective method of syncing my contacts and calendar with my phone. Also something which can back up my phones photos onto my laptop and if possible text messages. A bonus would also be it I could have my contacts and calendar synced and saved on the internet securely. Of course this being MSE I’m looking for something free if possible.
I know there seem to be lots of programme I can find which seem to offer mobile syncing, but which are most reliable and likely to be along for a long time (I used outlook on basis would be around for a long time to come), and will be easy transfer over to a new laptop or phone?
Be grateful of assistance on this.

Doesn't Android sync contacts and calendar with your Google account?
If it does then Thunderbird has plugins to sync those things to a computer.
