Best Cards for £5k+ one off spend

Good morning all.

I have a (hopefully) quick question for those in the know about credit cards and savy spending.

My new wife and I have booked our honeymoon in October and need to pay off the balance soon (August) with Trailfinders. It is around £5.5k which we have now saved up and are ready to pay.

I've used cashback cards in the past, but know that there is a limit to how cashback you can get in the high % cash back intro period. I don't fly that often (once or twice per year) so not sure if a points card would be that beneficial.

So, in a nutshell my question is what is the best card/combination of cards to use for this transaction?? All advice welcome.

Thanks in advance
Gavin

Are you sure that the company doesn't charge extra for CC payments?
If they do, most likely this will kill any cashback unless it's Amex with 5% back on all spending for 3 mths (on £2K, but you can pay a part of £5.5K by it if you have other good options)

According to their FAQ they don't: "Dont forget that Trailfinders does not charge for credit cards, the price you see is the price you pay!"

I can confirm they don't charge a fee for using a credit card. I've booked holidays with them for a number of years.
  • Using the Amex Platinum Everyday card will probably be your best bet! You'll get £100 for the bonus 5% and probably ~another £35 for the rest of the balance.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.
  • thanks for all of the replies,

If I got the AMEX card and spent £2k of the £5.5k with them, would it then be worth getting other cashback cards for the rest of the £3k balance, or get 'points' or whatever?

It's up to you. I prefer cash rather than some points of doubtful value.

If you are looking for cash then the Amex cashback already mentioned is probably your best best. However judging by the cost of your holiday (albeit I'm sure you're splashing out extra on the honeymoon) I'm guessing you might be partial to flying towards the front of the plane. If so then the BA Premium Amex would also be an option given that you'd meet the sign up bonus spend in one go and be over half way towards the 2 for 1 voucher at £10K.

I like your thinking, but the flights are already booked with Virgin, but had looked at their card, or even another AVIOS type card for future flying. thanks for the idea
