Any plumbers for advice please

Hi, I wondered whether there might be the odd plumber around who could possibly advise me please.

Basically, I am a female and dont have a clue. I am having a new bathroom fitted......However, I am currently renting from a housing association and have absolutely no say in what is fitted etc......all standard, cheap stuff fitted by cheap labourers and it has been an absolute nightmare and being a perfectionist it has all been quite horrifying to observe............

The loo......there was a perfectly nice fairly new loo already here - no issues with it - quiet flush....close couple with push button flush....fine.........they have fitted the most hideous toilet i have ever seen.........it has a large cystern with side handle flush on top of about 6 inches of pipe from a tiny toilet...awful...........

My main problem is that the flush is immensely loud - I am talking concorde taking off and the noise continues for ages and just as you think its quietening - whoosh, it picks up again until it `finally` settles down and then we have drip, drip, drip for up to half an hour afterwards...........I truly cannot stand it..........I have mentioned it over and over to the plumber and the site agent and been told this is how they are.........But how can anything new be so darn noisy and in this day and age......(the make of the cystern is twyford and probably their cheapest line....).....
On telling another guy who is apparently in charge of the group of chep labourers....his gang of workmen he told one of them to turn the pressure down...........they never did it and today i mentioned it to the site agent again who said that is how it is.....The plumber who isnt the brightest has said that unless something is changed int he cystern there is nothing that can be done.........something being changed would mean me buying it and paying for him to put it in privately.........

They are coming in for the last time on thursday so my last chance to try to get this loo sorted out - i genuinely cannot live with that toilet............i dont know whether i am being fobbed off by them and something could be done.....

Interestingly if the loo has been flushed making its horrendous noise and i run the tap to wash to hands the noise of the flush quietens a little bit whilst the tap is running........

Help - can anybody advise me please........sorry for such a long post.

Many thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear your woes - but as it's a council house then you have little option than to get it done 'privately'.

Order one of these (32359)and have it fitted (that's if it's a bottom fed fill valve, e.g. the pipework for the valve goes into the bottom of the cistern - if it's fed high into the side of the cistern then order one of these (92220) instead)

    Hope this helps

Thank you Russ - that is really very helpful.

Can I ask you how much a plumber should charge (cash) for putting this in and will it also stop the constant drip drip drip after the flush as well.........

    Many thanks indeed....

If you found a very friendly plumber, make him/her lots of tea and is already there on 'official' business (which it sounds like they are) then anything from £20 to £40 to swap this over for you - sounds like all the fittings are new so there won't be any suprises.

The good thing about those valves is that they fill from the bottom of the cistern upwards, so the 'inlet' is always under water.... and I've yet to hear a drip from something that's already under water :D

Hope this helps and I hope you get it sorted.

I just wanted to add - for anybody with a similar problem....I bought the valve in homebase for £14 - gave the plumber £20 - he said it would take 15 minutes.............and the result is great.

A third of the noise....quicker flush and absolutely no drips whatsoever.....why on earth dont they fit these in the loos as standard.....

    Thanks again to Russ..
