best cat food - discuss

Hi.
looking to see what everyone's views are on the best cat food.
My three are currently on whatever they choose to eat / best offer in the pet shop - all from the more expensive dried food ranges.
I'm looking to feed them the best possible diet - had a few minor health problems recently and its made me wonder are they getting the best diet to keep them healthy as possible. I've never really researched cats diet before. Planning to start by making use of your expertise

Hiya first read
catinfo .org
has the best info for diet
cats have a low thirst drive so they need a mainly wet food diet to keep kidneys in good shape. And as they are carnivores the more meat the better .But be warned most wet cat food that comes from supermarkets are full of sugar and will wreck their teeth.
best stuff on market in uk from a site called natural instinct fresh cat food no junk no rubbish and you need to keep in freezer
i currently feed porta 21 sensible dry and smilla wet as i am on a tight budget. Unfortunately zooplus don't sell porta 21 sensible anymore but they replaced it with Porta 21 Feline Finest Cats Heaven which is 60 % chicken and only £3 a kg
smilla has no plant or vegetable matter but only 40% named meat products you can get better, also if you want to buy from zooplus don't use yodel for delivery
other good brands
Applaws
Orijen
taste of the wild
Grau Gourmet Grain-Free
Purizon
thrive
Almo Nature
Arden Grange
Acana
Animonda Carny
don't just go by brand or the pretty packing,or the logic that it costs more therefor its good, look for named meat products not animal derivatives,by product or digest if you want the best
hope this helps

Expensive doesn't mean good. Especially from the supermarket. Expensive from the supermarket means crap.
Anything that has a high meat content and is grain free. Meat should always be the first ingredient (meat meal if dry food) and fillers such as potato, rice, veg etc should be minimal.
The best dry foods by far are Orijen, applaws etc. wet food. There's a lot of great quality wet food on zoo plus and very few in the supermarkets.Sigless0 -
Try to get as much wet food into them as possible - this is much better for them than dry foods
If you do have to do dry, look at some of the grain free ones
The Porta 21 Eggyteapot mentions is great (and Zooplus do still sell it AND it's on offer! http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/dry_cat_food/porta_21/porta21_feline_finest/414194 & you can also get at Britta so it is obtainable) - works out cheaper than a lot of the carp you get at the sm!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000

I could be flippant and say the best cat food is the one your cat will eat!
I don't approve of a purely dry diet - cats are carnivores and although I don't think a bit of dry food hurts - I am sure wet or raw is better. I cant get my cat to eat raw, so he has a couple of pouches of wet food - one for lunch and one for supper and I leave dry food down for him to snack on. he also has the Applaws tins - he loves those.
I was only buying the 'expensive' pouches - but have since discovered that he will eat Whiskas pouches (but not kit e kat). he loves Aldi's cat treat sticks but wont eat their pouches.
its a very individual thing with cats. they 'like what they like' and would rather starve than eat something they don't like! so just try different things, tins, pouches, dry. then feed what the cat tells you it likes. and you will know hun - believe me! you will be left in no doubt what he likes or dislikes.0 -

zooplus told me they stopped selling this size thank goodness i guess complaining worked other day i noticed they stopped selling the 10kg bags so i complained now its back. Porta 21 is the best before i fed my cat prolwer this food he was ill threw up regularly this i changed his diet the change has been amazing.I have a healthy cat plus as it has much more animal protein in it than cheaper cat food it lasts much longer my cats dont eat as much as they used too.0
