Recommendations for Photo Sharing Site

Do you use online photo albums?

I'd like to publish my digital photo's online and to be able to invite friends/family etc. to view them. Is there any site that is easier to use than the others and do you need to resize the photo's before uploading them?

I have heard of Flickr, Photobox, Yahoo and more. Which one?

Thanks

H

May be worth checking out winkflash too. They have free unlimited photo storage (& sharing) so you won't need to resize pictures if you don't want to. High-res downloads are free too, & there's no obligation to print anything, etc to keep your account active*. G

*Unlike Snapfish's similar 'free' unlimited storage offering, which has many conditions/restrictions & isn't really free - unless one has the patience to upload all their pics once a year! Can't fault their online print service though, which has been excellent for me - many free print offers here from them & many others

I dont know how much time you have and how professional your photo's are, but I made my girlfriend a photo sharing website for her birthday :D

    http://gallery.menalto.com/

The above link is a type of Content Management System which allows you to publish your own photo's. All you need is some webspace and a domain name. There are many helpful tutorials on how to do it and its really not too hard when you follow them ^-^

It gives you freedom to upload what you want, and you can allow your friends accounts to upload their own photo's too!

I embedded it into a bigger system called Xoops (google) to make an entire web system, but gallery runs fine on its own :)

    Hope that helps.

Yahoo! Photos is shutting down in September so you may as well cross that one off your list.

There is probably something suited to your needs available for free but it very much depends on your priorities. The questions you need to ask yourself (and provide answers to if you need help) include:

    - How much storage do I need?
    - Will I be uploading once in bulk and then in a trickle, or just a steady trickle from the word go?
    - Do I want host printing facility?
    - Am I bothered of the host resizes my pictures?
    - Do I want to be able to download full-resolution images?
    - Do I want to go with an established name so that my photos are less likely to get pulled (although I thought I was safe with Yahoo! and look what happened!)

    As a guide:
    - Photobucket resizes images
    - Shutterfly caters more for those who order prints, t-shirts etc (don't seem to be able to view/download full size)
    - Picasa and Flickr free editions are limited in storage/bandwidth (I think)
    - Winkflash seems to have it all but seems to be new to market

Google's Picassa software allows you to manage your photos and upload them to 1Gb of web space. It does all the usual things such as slideshows, downloads, etc. You can make private albums that only invited people can see as well as public albums.

    See: http://picasaweb.google.com/

Another thought... Don't rely on these services keeping your photos indefinitely, make sure you keep local backups (Despite what the annoying BT advert may say)

I use photobox which is easy to use but you are limited on how many photos you can store for free.

To allow me to make a new album Ive hadto delete 2 other albums. Thats just me being a MSE !! (tight !!!!)

    - How much storage do I need? Unknown at present but min1Gb
    - Will I be uploading once in bulk and then in a trickle, or just a steady trickle from the word go? Appox 200 photos initially then as and when, Could upload in smaller batches
    - Do I want host printing facility? Not required
    - Am I bothered of the host resizes my pictures? No
    - Do I want to be able to download full-resolution images? No
    - Do I want to go with an established name so that my photos are less likely to get pulled (although I thought I was safe with Yahoo! and look what happened!) Prefer a good service to established name

Thanks Joshm, most useful. I didn't know about yahoo so will cross that off the list. Winkflash looks good but as you say new to the market.
