Train from London to Preston/Manchester/Blackburn?

Hi.
I'm planning on travelling from London to visit my dad in Lancashire on the 20th July, returning on the 22nd. I could travel to Preston, Manchester or Blackburn.
Basically, I work until 18.00 on Fridays and won't be able to leave any earlier than this. I don't therefore want to get the Megabus, because if I do I'll arrive really late.
I've been having a look at train fares on thetrainline.com, but they're really expensive (£60 - £70). I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of a way I could get there reasonably cheaply without having to sit on a bus all night.
Thanks!

Hi!
Unfortunately you've left it a bit late for getting the cheap fares, there are a certain number of tickets and they sell out quickly, particularly at the times you are traveling.
Sometimes Midland Mainline have absurdly cheap promotions on, so if you don't mind changing at Sheffield or Leeds they can be an option for Manchester.
I hope that helps

The only thing I can suggest is leaving it until the Saturday morning - there look to be plenty of £12.50 singles to Manchester then for example.
Later on Friday evening there are £25 singles - but they may be too late for you.
Look on the virgin trains site - they have some fares that the Trainline doesn't offer0
