Hidden Terms in Car Policy - Can they do this?

Options
I've got a car insurance policy with More Than, and I wanted to add my partner to it as a temporary driver. I got a quote from them last week, and I was going to add her on today.

I've now been told I can't do as she is not currently a UK resident, and doesn't have a UK licence. She's EU (and was last week too..). This firstly seems extremely primitive (I was added onto policies in other European countries more than 15 years ago..), and secondly I'm very annoyed that there is no such terms in my policy booklet which they can refer to. The simply say that the underwriters say this, but can't show me where or how I would know this when I bought my policy.

I've made a complaint, but don't expect anything useful other than the usual rubbish. Is there anything else I can do?

Comments

  • If she does not have a UK license then that will be why. Rules have changed a lot since I started driving 32 years ago. What you should have done was put her into a comparisson site with EU DL and to have seen what it would cost.

It isnt a term as such but an acceptance of business criteria.

Your complaint is similar to complaining to apple that they dont sell android phones in their stores. If they dont want to cover certain people then that is their commercial decision.

I don't really agree with your analogy at all. I'm not complaining that they're not selling me one type of product when I want another. I'm complaining that they're hiding conditions from the customer at time of purchase, plus they're still not able to show me a document now when I request it.

In addition, things may have changed considerably in the past 32 years, but one point that has been pushed is not differentiating between different EU nationalities, hence I am currently insured on a car in Spain at present, even though I don't have a spanish driving licence or live in Spain.

They agreed to the cover you requested.

Now you want to change the cover and they don't want to provide it.

You are stuck with either accepting this or cancelling and going elsewhere.

(It's you wanting to change the goalposts, not them - you cannot expect them to list all the changes to your original application you might want to make that will be unacceptable)

Yes you are. You want a product that covers non UK residents. They dont offer a product that covers that.

It is not part of their T&C. it is part of their underwriting acceptance criteria.

Insurers can literally impose what terms and conditions they want and I'm sure if you looked hard enough this would be apparent at point of sale.
